Composition
Zhi Mu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) clarifies heat that flows upward due to the overactivity of the life gate/ministerial fire. Suan Zao Ren (Semen Zizyphi Spinosae) and Fu Ling (Poria) calm the spirit. Fu Ling also strengthens the spleen, which, according to Li Dong-yuan's yin-fire theory, helps control the agitation of the ministerial fire that flows upward. Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) moves qi and blood, helping to disperse local inflammation, considering that inflammation is an accumulation/stagnation of yang qi. Chuan Xiong directs the other ingredients of the formula to the head area, acting as a calming spirit in children. Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) clarifies heat and harmonizes the other ingredients in the formula. The addition of a relatively large amount of Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Albae) is intended to help clear liver heat, as Bai Shao is bitter, acidic, and slightly cold. It is common for the liver to have an excess of yang in children, as well as a particularly close relationship with the life gate/ministerial fire. If the liver becomes stagnant, it easily produces heat, which leads to the production and mutual agitation of the ministerial fire. Therefore, gently clearing or controlling liver heat clarifies and controls the ministerial fire. Combining Bai Shao with Gan Cao helps relieve pain, while combining Bai Shao with Suan Zao Ren reinforces this formula's ability to calm the spirit and allow for restful sleep.
