Chai Hu regulates the liver and resolves stagnation, while Dang Gui nourishes the blood and harmonizes the liver. Bai Zhu and Fu Ling strengthen the spleen and tonify the qi. He Huan Pi, Ye Jiao Teng, Fu Ling, and Gan Cao (toasted) nourish the heart and calm the spirit. Gou Teng and Huang Qin drain and clear liver heat. Gou Teng calms the spirit. Ban Xia, Fu Ling, and Shi Chang Pu transform phlegm, open the orifices, benefit the intellect, and calm the spirit. Chuan Xiong helps rectify the qi and directs the other ingredients upward to the head and brain. When all these ingredients are used together, their effect is to harmonize the liver/spleen, clear heat and calm the spirit, transform phlegm, and benefit the intellect.
