Composition
Dang Shen, Bai Zhu, and Fu Ling strengthen the spleen and tonify qi, while Sheng Di and Mai Men Dong nourish yin and generate body fluids, protecting yin from being consumed by fire. Fu Ling, Che Qian Zi, Hu Po, Deng Xin Cao, and Dan Zhu Ye clear heart heat. Fu Ling and Che Qian Zi are used to replace the action of Caulis Akebiae (Mu Tong), which is avoided in Blue Poppy formulas due to its aristolochic acid content. Huang Lian and Mai Men Dong clear heart heat. Sheng Di and Chi Shao clear heat and cool the blood, helping to clear heart and liver heat. Bai Shao and Chi Shao relieve irritability due to liver-qi stagnation. Bai Shao and Sheng Di also nourish the blood and moisten the liver. They also astringent and protect fluids from being consumed by the other ingredients in this formula, which raise yang and resolve the exterior. Fang Feng, Qiang Huo, and Sheng Ma are the ingredients that raise yang and expel heat from stagnation. Fang Feng harmonizes the liver and spleen, Sheng Ma clears stomach heat and has a specific empirical effect on treating mouth and tongue sores. Fang Feng and Qiang Huo enter the bladder channel. Hu Po also enters the bladder channel, as well as the heart and liver channels, calming the spirit while promoting the free flow of urination. Gan Cao harmonizes all the other ingredients in this formula and relaxes liver tension, which is one of the main mechanisms of heart fire exuberance.

Therapeutic Actions
Stagnant liver and stomach heat can cause the rise and agitation of the ministerial fire (yin fire). This damages the spleen. Since heat and fire are yang in nature, their natural ascendancy is inherent. Harmful heat rises to the heart and disturbs the spirit, resulting in restlessness.
